The UNISA SRC Elections Offer Insights on How Youth could Vote in 2019 !!!

Recently, the University of South Africa (UNISA) held the Student Representative Council (SRS) elections both nationally and across all the provinces of South Africa. The graph above shows the outcome of the national elections results and what is striking is that no single student representative organization was able to secure an absolute majority of the ballots cast.

Sasco, which secured the highest number of votes, was only able to secure 30.3% of the total ballots cast. The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) was able to secure the third highest number of votes (18.8%) behind the Economic Freedom Front Student Command (EFFSC) at 27.6% of the votes and just ahead of the Demoratic Alliance Student Organization (DASO) which secured 11,6% of the ballots cast. This mean that the national UNISA SRC will  not be lead my a single organization. A coalition of some sort would have to emerge if the UNISA SRC is to function smoothly and make any decisions.

While the total number of ballots cast in these elections is small, at just under 29,000, relative to South Africa's eligible electorate it would interesting if these UNISA SRC election results are reflective of how the youth of South Africa will vote in the 2019 General Elections.
