In his recent State of the Nation Address, President Jacob Zuma made mention of a number of initiatives and goals for his government for the year ahead. In his speech, the President dedicated a short paragraph talking to South Africa's role as a new member of the BRIC group of nations. Towards the end of 2010, Chinese President, Hu Jintao extended an invitation to South Africa to join the grouping, and since then it had become a forgone conclusion that South Africa would accept that offer.
The acknowledgment by President Zuma, in his State of the Nation Address, was the first such official sign that South Africa now sees itself as part of the BRIC group of nations. South Africans can now look forward to the outcomes of the third BRIC summit due to be held in April of this year in China, where South Africa will participate for the first time as a member country.
As you read this mail, it is now official that China is now the world's second largest economy behind the USA, having just leap-frogged Japan.
It's exciting times ahead for South Africa and the African continent at large!!
