In a post last last year (What will 2012 hold?) I listed what believe to be events that will define world politics in 2012 and beyond. One of these events is unfolding as you read this blog. It appears that Vladimir Putin is on track for a landslide victory in the Russian general elections. Bar any unforseen events, Mr. Putin will become Russian President for the third time, after a four-year break.
The question is, how will world politics change with Putin at the helm in Russian? Perhaps closer to home, the question is what impact will President Putin have on the BRICS formation, of which South Africa is a member? Some arque that little will change, as Mr. Putin has effectively been running Russia, even while he was Prime Minister over the past four years.
